I'm a big fan of the current Gnome desktop, and still think it's the best user interface I've ever interacted with. Unity I'm less keen on, and I did try it out for another couple of hours today before changing back to Gnome. It's pretty enough, and I can see the point of it, I just don't feel it offers anything extra. Regarding 11.04, I'll upgrade because I can get it working the way I want within 5 minutes, but I'm still unsure as to what I'll be using in 2 years time.

I'm still unsure about Unity. What's so wrong with the existing Gnome desktop that we need to do away with panel applets, menus in windows, and a movable launcher? Don't get me wrong, Unity is brilliant for netbooks, but transitioning the entire codebase across to Unity — particularly before it's even fully ready — seems like it could be getting into the realms of change for change's sake. This may turn out to be the first time I skip an Ubuntu release and wait for the LTS.

I've been happy with my Acer Inspire 1410 for the combo of netbook size & price, with proper sized keyboard & laptop performance.Don't know about installing Linux etc, but I imagine the internet would be your friend for that. Battery usage isn't as high as you'd like (i think about 3-4 hours?) but you can also buy it with (or buy additionally, can't recall?) a chunkier battery block which will improve that.That was bought about a year ago, so there's probably something better out now within the same range.

I keep wanting to do this every time I upgrade my laptop (first installed with Ubuntu 6.06, and not refreshed since then) but I now have so much customisation and extra software that I honestly don't know if I'd ever get it back to the same state…

Have to agree with Kid A as THE best Radiohead has ever done. Utterly brilliant and haunting. But it was the decade metal saw a massive revival and we are all spiritually better off for it. Metallica got good again and Linkin Park happened, as did System of a Down amongst many many more works of art!! m/

Must be the change in the seasons and the shorter days! On music, on leftfield music, I am losing myself in the wonderfully over the top Rammstein and their new album. Good ol German Industrial Heavy Metal, with the occasional tongue in cheek. Can't wait to see them live.
